Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) on Wednesday criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for wearing masks as they carry out the Trump administration&#8217;s escalating <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/5119825-trump-immigration-crackdown-southern-border-asylum-cbp-one-refugees\/\">crackdown on illegal immigration<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese ICE agents would do themselves a lot of favor and have more credibility if they did not wear masks and they identified themselves more, because if they are standing on lawfulness, they shouldn&#8217;t be afraid to show their faces,\u201d Swalwell told NewsNation\u2019s Chris Cuomo on his show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so that part bothers me as well, that they, no other law enforcement agency, operates routinely the way that they&#8217;re doing this, and it\u2019s terrorizing people,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since his return to the White House, President Trump has ramped up arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants and foreign students \u2014 policies often carried out by masked ICE agents in plain clothes. The directives and tactics have drawn heated backlash from Democrats and immigrant advocates. <\/p>\n<p>In a Monday letter, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/5390939-democrats-question-ice-officer-operations\/\">a group of Senate Democrats pressed<\/a> ICE on uniform and masking protocol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe write regarding the apparent widespread violations of historical norms and traditions in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u2019s (\u2018ICE\u2019) operations in Los Angeles and across the country by engaging in law enforcement activities\u2014including arrests\u2014without wearing identifying uniforms and while masked,\u201d the lawmakers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In their letter, the group of Democrats questioned ICE on its \u201cpolicies with regards to wearing masks while on duty\u201d and its \u201cpolicies with regards to wearing uniforms or other identifiable markers while on duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swalwell, in response to a post from television personality Geraldo Rivera on the social <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepSwalwell\/status\/1942788085303107798\">platform X in which he questioned<\/a> the masking of ICE agents, said Tuesday that \u201creal cops don\u2019t wear masks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hill has reached out to ICE for comment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
